Introduction/Eight Limbs of Yoga

Yamas & Niyamas

Yoga is typically seen as just moving your body and focusing on breath. But truly, moving and breathing are only two parts of the Eightfold Path of yoga. We have a "tree" that we use as a visual to help understand all the limbs of yoga. Without indulging too much into Sanskrit terms, the limbs of yoga include our Yamas and Niyamas, Asana (poses), breath regulation, withdrawal of senses, concentration, deep meditation, and Samadhi (Oneness or True Bliss). Yoga is so much deeper than you would think and comes with a lot of advice on how to live in love and connection to everything.

So- our series focuses on the first two limbs or branches of yoga, Yamas and Niyamas.

Yamas are character-building restraints/guidelines or how you interact with your environment.

Niyamas are rules for living soulfully and how you interact with yourself.

It might all seem a little complex right now, but each week I will have a blog post on each part of the series, so if during class you feel like you missed something or just want to dive deeper into the session, I'll have everything posted on the blog.

Stay tuned for Ahimsa!
